Father’s Day is right around the corner, and it’s time to show Dad just how much we appreciate him!
If you’ve done it all before - the power tools, the fishing rods, the bougie shaving kit, the outdoor adventure - it’s time to try gifting Dad something he’ll love for years.
Since the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, let’s make sure dad never goes hungry or forgets he’s loved. Here are our top 5 favorite fruiting trees to make Dad’s day this Father’s Day!
1. Persian Lime Tree
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere! If your dad’s favorite way to wind down after a long day is by whipping up a quick cocktail at his home bar, or dropping a fresh cut lime in his Corona, this tree is the perfect gift for him.
The Persian Lime is easy to care for and has a long fruiting season. Once these trees are fully mature, they’ll fruit during the warm months. Persian limes are particularly well regarded among chefs, and they’re the variety you’re most likely to pick up at the grocery store. With thin rinds and seedless flesh, Persian limes are extremely juicy. They’re suited to all kinds of culinary delights, not to mention your dad’s drink of choice.
Caring for Persian Lime trees is easy. They thrive both in pots and in the ground. Simply make sure they receive full sunlight year round. Bring them inside during the winter and place them back outside during the spring and summer to encourage this
tree to fruit.
One of our favorite Persian Lime perks is the way the tree blooms! This tree produces beautiful, fragrant white blossoms in the spring, just before it gives way to its equally aromatic and delectable fruit!
2. Avocado Tree
If you make a Dad a Persian lime margarita, he might want some fresh guacamole (and tacos) to go with it.
Truly unique to any home chef’s garden delights is none other than the avocado tree. These trees are the gift that just keeps on giving!
If your dad has a lot of talents, but a green thumb isn’t one of them, consider giving your foodie father a low maintenance avocado tree. The variety we carry is particularly hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees! They’re equally happy in the ground or in a container, and they can fruit as early as their first year.
This tree does well indoors and outdoors, but make sure it gets about 6 hours of sun each day. As with most trees that are used to hot and dry climates, only water this tree when its soil is dry to the touch.
3. Arbequina Olive Tree
Following the trend of fool-proof fruiting trees, check out the Arbequina Olive!
Honestly, it’s next to impossible to kill this tree - perfect for the dad who doesn’t have a green thumb (yet).
One of our favorite things about the Arbequina Olive is how gorgeous it is! With slender silvery foliage and weeping branches, this tree is a delight to have in any room or yard. And yes, it can live in the ground or in a pot.
Arbequina olives are one of the most popular types of olives grown and harvested in California. These trees are drought tolerant, disease resistant, cold hardy, and accustomed to thriving in what other plants would consider stressful conditions. Oh, and the olives are delicious.
If Dad likes the process of making food just as much as he loves eating food, this tree is an especially good fit for him. Once the olives are ripe and ready to be harvested, they need to go through a 30 day curing process in a salt brine. Really, dad can get as nerdy as he wants with his new olive tree!
4. Meyer Lemon
Dads are sometimes the jack of all trades in the family deck. Sound like your dad? Then a Meyer Lemon is the best tree for him!
Meyer lemon trees are notorious for putting out a sweet, versatile fruit. Perfect for all sorts of cooking, baking, and other kitchen adventures, you can’t go wrong with this citrus delight.
As one of the most prolific fruiting trees out there, Meyer Lemons have the ability to produce fruit year round, but they’ll put out the most during the warmer months of the year. Just like its cousin, the Persian Lime, Meyer Lemons bloom with little white flowers that showcase a signature fragrance. If dad likes flowers too, this tree is a great Father’s Day gift.
Caring for Meyer Lemons is simple; just like lime trees, these love full sun and only require water when their soil is dry. As a container friendly plant, you can keep these trees on a patio or in the ground.
5. Brown Turkey Fig Tree
For all the quirky dads out there, this one was practically made for you. If “hippy” or “granola” are words you’d use to describe your dad, or maybe he’s just always got a pair of hiking boots at the ready, a fig tree is the way to go.
Similar to the Arbequina Olive, Brown Turkey fig trees are super easy to keep thriving. They’re drought tolerant, disease resistant, and generally incredibly hardy. They boast gorgeous robust foliage, not to mention their tasty fruit! Dried fruits, jams, and all manner of treats are absolutely in your future.
Once they’re fully mature, this species of fig tree fruits heavily in the spring and early summer months. According to the USDA plant hardiness map, this tree is sure to thrive in most of the mid to southern regions of the US.
Parting Thoughts
So, in case you missed the memo - we love giving gifts that give back. It’s kind of our thing. When you’re thinking of dad this Father’s Day, try branching out (pun intended) into the world of fruiting trees.
But, aside from the snacks, it’s a living memory to remind dad just how much you care.
Happy Father’s Day!
